Horned Frogs annihilate No. 9 BYU, 32-7
TCU used a pair of early touchdowns to jump to an early lead and a 32-7 win over ninth-ranked BYU Thursday night. A 21-yard field goal to start the second quarter, and a 12-yard touchdown reception to end it, gave the Frogs (7-1, 4-0 MWC) a 23-0 halftime lead, which they would not surrender.
Receivers scored TCU’s opening touchdowns, one a reception and the other a run. Jimmy Young scored first, capping off a two-play drive with a 25-yard touchdown catch of an Andy Dalton pass. Six minutes later receiver Jeremy Kerley scored on a 16-yard run after taking a direct snap from center Blake Schlueter.
Ross Evans kicked a 21-yard field goal and Walter Bryant made a 12-yard touchdown reception in the corner of the end zone to round out the Frogs’ first-half scoring. Evans missed the PAT kick after Bryant’s touchdown.
In addition to the balanced offensive attack, the Horned Frogs contained BYU quarterback Max Hall and the Cougar offense “ which had previously ranked among the best in the nation in several categories."
The TCU defense held Heisman Trophy hopeful Hall to 274 yards passing, and the BYU (6-1, 2-1 MWC) offense to just 23 rushing yards. The loss snapped BYU’s 16-game win streak, which had been the longest active streak in the nation. The BYU offensive line, which had only given up two sacks all season, gave up seven to the Horned Frogs.
The Cougars’ offense woke up in the second half with several long drives. After TCU’s Evans added a 31-yard field goal at 11:41 in the third quarter to extend the Frogs’ lead to 26-0, Hall marched BYU down the field on a 15-play, 72-yard drive. Hall scored from 2 yards out on a fourth-and-goal run with 4:26 in the third quarter to make the score 26-7.
The Frogs answered with an 11-play, 76-yard drive. Joseph Turner ran in from 5 yards for the touchdown, but Evans missed his second PAT kick of the game. The Frogs led at the end of three quarters, 32-7.
BYU drove to the TCU 11-yard line, but Nick Sanders intercepted a fourth-down Hall pass for a touchback. BYU’s next drive also went deep into TCU territory, but defensive end Jerry Hughes forced a fumble and the Frogs recovered with 7:10 left in the game and were able to run out the clock.
Former Brownwood Lion Bart Johnson had one catch for 13 yards.
